If you’re a regular on Instagram or Pinterest or any social media platform for that matter, you may have noticed that you can almost tell if a home is in India or outside it, based on the flooring, furniture, decor elements and other details. However, today’s home is an exception. On the surface, you would think that this was a home somewhere in Chennai or Madurai or Kochi or Mangalore, but it’s not – it’s all the way in Perth, Australia!
An Aussie Home in true South Indian Style – Kavitha’s Home Tour
Today’s home tour features the absolutely stunning home of Kavitha, a homemaker, and Vivek, a CFO, who live with their adorable kids. It’s a home that’s full of the home owners’ personality and is bursting with colors!
Kavitha, fondly known as ‘Kavi’ at home, is a University Rank Holder from her college days, and was also ‘Best Outgoing Student’ of her college. With an M.Phil in English Literature and a PGDCA degree, Kavitha is quite the academic, but she is currently involved in volunteering at organisations like Red Cross and Goodwill.
Kavitha is also a complete homebody, and her home is a true labor of love. “I am a self-taught interior décor enthusiast. I love anything that looks antique, vintage or Indian. Antique decor is my passion.” This is a sentiment that is reflected throughout this sunny home, and even large pieces of furniture stay true to the antique theme.
The first thing to strike you in Kavitha’s home is her immaculately maintained collection of brass artefacts. Brass is abundantly used throughout the house – in the living and dining areas, kitchen, bedrooms and foyer. Many of these are heirlooms from her family, which make them that much more precious.
Kavitha also has an enviable collection of brass idols, which are beautifully placed across her home. When it comes to festivals, Kavitha goes all out, decking up her home and dressing up her beloved Murugar in different clothes for the days of the Kandhashasti.
Besides Murugar and Ganesha, Kavitha’s home also features many representations of Buddha, which give the entire place a very zen-like appeal.
Kavitha is also a proud plant-Mom, and her plant babies are lush and healthy. There are so many of them – it’s a plant lover’s dream! The home owners ensure that every corner and surface has bursts of green, which add a lovely freshness to their interiors.
The living room features a large black sofa, but rather than being overwhelming, it becomes a canvas for all the other colors and textures. Bright cushions, soft rugs, shiny brass and lots of plants complete the space and make it the perfect spot to unwind or bond with family.
You’ll notice that Kavitha likes pink, and there are hints of it all over her home. Whether it’s light or dark, she infuses some shade of the color in her favorite corners!
Vivek is a minimalist, and prefers clutter-free spaces which don’t have too much furniture. Kavitha, on the other hand, loves hoarding little knicks knacks she finds here and there! She can’t resist anything antique and Indian-looking. The kitchen is a perfect marriage of both their sensibilities. With clean lines and light colors, this is a kitchen to die for!
How adorable is that brass kettle on the hob? Brass also makes its presence in the dining room, where Kavitha loves serving her food in traditional style. She enjoys home cooked food, and makes an effort to serve it beautifully. On festive occasions, she takes it up a notch, as these pictures will prove!
Despite being an excellent student, Kavitha decided to give up her career to focus on her kids. She calls her kids her “best friends and critics”. Her kids have imbibed some of her hobbies of photography, gardening and reading, and the result is evident in the kids spaces.
The vignette above was put together by Kavitha’s daughter, which clearly shows she’s inherited her mother’s talent! Kavitha is an avid crafter and an expert at upcycling. She converted an old clock into a painted show piece, wood scraps into coasters, and even a cheeseboard into a frame for Ganesha!
When she moved into her Australian home, she missed having a mandir. But Kavitha is not one to accept defeat, so she converted a standard bedside table and an IKEA side table into her very own custom-made Mandir! Some antique South Indian bells and her beloved brass idols and she was all set.
The family loves to travel, and they often bring back souvenirs from the places they’ve been to. These find places in corners of their home, along with framed photographs of their travels. When she’s not rearranging her home, Kavitha is quite active on social media, where she gets inspiration from fellow decor bloggers. She is also the admin for the Indian Antique Decor Facebook group for like minded decor enthusiasts. Kavitha does her work from cute little working nooks she’s created for herself in different parts of the house.
Kavitha and Vivek’s home is proof that no matter how high you fly, you never forget your roots. A visit to her home is sure to cheer anyone up, and you’ll leave with affectionate feelings for your own roots and a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart.
