The Kattu Saayam process — what makes this saree special

This is an Achu Kattu Sungudi — one of Madurai’s most authentic cotton sungudi sarees, made using traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing, a labour-intensive method that no machine can replicate. Artisans hand-stamp hot wax in precise three-dot Mukkati patterns onto the cotton fabric using carved wooden blocks. Every single dot is placed individually by hand. The fabric is then dyed, the wax removed, and what’s left is that characteristic Mukkati grouping scattered evenly across the body — slightly irregular, completely unique, entirely handmade.

The earthy olive green body is woven from pure Madurai cotton — fine, breathable, and naturally comfortable even through a long day. The rich coffee brown Rudraksh Rettapet border with gold zari gives it a warm, grounded finish that makes this one of the most wearable cotton sungudi sarees from Madurai — equally at home at a temple visit, a family lunch, or a traditional celebration.

• Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
• Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
