White Velthari Sungudi Saree — Straight from Madurai’s Looms
In the world of Madurai sungudi sarees, the Velthari (வெள்தாரி) holds a special place. “Velthari” means white in Tamil — and this pure white sungudi saree is exactly that. No colour, no dye, no dots — just the natural beauty of pure white cotton, elevated with fine gold zari check lines woven across the body and a traditional peacock border running along the hem. It’s the saree of temple visits, of auspicious occasions, of the kind of quiet elegance that needs no embellishment.
What makes the Velthari special
While most sungudi sarees go through the wax-resist dyeing process to create their characteristic dot patterns, the Velthari is kept in its purest form — undyed white cotton that retains the natural texture and breathability of the original weave. The gold zari check lines are woven directly into the fabric, creating a subtle shimmer that catches the light beautifully without overwhelming the simplicity of the white body. This is a saree that has been worn by Tamil women for generations on their most meaningful occasions — temple festivals, puja days, family rituals, and auspicious celebrations.
The pure white body is woven from premium Madurai sungudi cotton — fine, breathable, and naturally comfortable even through a long day. The peacock motif border in gold zari runs along the edge, and the pallu carries the same gold zari check lines with the peacock border continuing at the edge — giving the entire saree a cohesive, finished look that is simple and deeply beautiful at the same time.
This saree comes with a blouse piece attached — 6 metres total including blouse.
A note about the white fabric — please read before ordering
Pure white sarees are handled alongside coloured fabrics during the weaving and processing stage. Slight colour smudges may be present on the fabric — this is natural and characteristic of hand-processed white cotton, not a defect. The actual colour may also appear slightly different from photos due to lighting and screen settings.
Care instructions:
- First wash: Hand wash gently in cold water with mild detergent
- Wash separately: Always wash alone — white cotton picks up colour easily from other fabrics
- Drying: Dry in shade — direct sunlight may cause yellowing over time
- Avoid harsh bleaches; use mild stain removers if needed
- Store separately from coloured sarees
A word on handcrafted pieces
Slight variations in the zari lines, weave, or texture are natural and expected. These are the marks of genuine handcraft, not imperfection.
