Description
Navy Blue Leaf Velthari Sungudi Saree
There’s a quiet strength to navy that never goes out of place — deep and dark, paired here with a soft grey that lightens the whole piece. This Leaf Velthari sungudi saree carries that contrast beautifully, the leaf motif running through both halves, making it a piece equally suited to daily wear and a more formal occasion.
Technique
This is a Leaf Velthari Sungudi — made using the traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing technique, with wax applied along the fabric in fine lines carrying a delicate leaf motif rather than plain stripes. Each line is placed by hand before dyeing, giving the velthari its gentle, slightly irregular rhythm — a signature of genuine handwork that no two pieces repeat exactly.
Body, border, pallu
The body sits in a deep navy, with fine gold leaf velthari lines running lengthwise across it. A clear tonal shift leads into the grey lower section, where the rettapet leaf velthari border runs in a bold double band on both sides. The pallu continues in grey, carrying the same leaf velthari pattern with zari lines crossing through it, forming a structured, elegant close to the saree.

A note about colour — please read before ordering
Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Actual colour may also appear slightly different from photos due to lighting and screen settings. You may also notice slight sand smudges; sungudi sarees are dyed and dried in sand under sunlight as part of the traditional process.
Care instructions
- First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
- Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach
- Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
- Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
A word on handcrafted pieces
Every Leaf Velthari sungudi saree from Madurai is handmade, and slight variations in the wax-resist lines, pattern placement, or colour tone are natural and expected — that’s part of what makes a handcrafted piece genuinely handcrafted. The actual colour may also vary slightly from photos due to lighting and screen settings.
