Cream Sungudi Saree with Red Peacock Rettapet Border — Straight from the Looms
There’s a reason cream Sungudi sarees have such a timeless appeal — the soft, elegant base brings out the richness of traditional colours beautifully. The cream body is adorned with kolam-inspired motifs, adding a traditional yet refined character to the saree. A striking red Peacock Rettapet border runs along both edges, creating a beautiful contrast against the cream base. The rich red pallu, finished with delicate zari lines, adds a subtle festive shimmer, while the matching red blouse completes the look beautifully.
The Kattu Saayam process — what makes this saree special
This is an Achu Kattu Sungudi — one of Madurai’s most authentic Sungudi saree styles, made using traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing, a labour-intensive method that no machine can replicate. Artisans hand-stamp hot wax onto the cotton fabric in intricate kolam-inspired patterns, using carved wooden blocks to create the looping, geometric motifs scattered across the body. The fabric is then dyed, the wax removed, and what’s left is the characteristic motif against the cream base — slightly irregular, completely unique, and entirely handmade.
The double-sided red border carries the traditional Peacock Rettapet design, adding a graceful and distinctive touch along both edges. The rich red border pairs beautifully with the soft cream body, creating a striking contrast that feels both elegant and rooted in traditional Madurai craftsmanship. The red pallu is finished with delicate zari lines, adding a subtle shimmer and festive character to the saree.
This saree comes with the blouse attached in matching red, making it easy to style straight out of the box — no need to search for a coordinating blouse piece.
The natural character of Sungudi weaving means each saree has its own subtle variations, making every piece beautifully unique.

A note about colour — please read before ordering
Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Actual colour may also appear slightly different from photos due to lighting and screen settings. You may also notice slight sand smudges; Sungudi sarees are dyed and dried in sand under sunlight as part of the traditional process.
Care instructions:
- First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock the colour.
- Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach.
- Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), and dry in shade — not direct sunlight.
- Avoid long soaking: These sarees are made from fine threads and should be handled gently.
A word on handcrafted pieces
Every Achu Kattu Sungudi saree is handmade, and slight variations in weave, pattern placement, or colour tone are natural and expected. A few thread pulls here and there are part of what makes a handcrafted piece genuinely handcrafted — each saree carries the character of the artisan who made it.
