Red Velthari Sungudi Saree — Straight from Madurai’s Looms

There’s a boldness to this red sungudi saree that’s hard to miss — the kind of red that works just as well for a festival morning as it does for an evening out. Fine gold velthari checks run across the body, giving it a subtle textured shimmer, and everything builds up to a wide annapakshi border on one side that’s genuinely a showstopper.

The annapakshi motif — the graceful swan figure — is one of the most cherished motifs in South Indian textile weaving, symbolising purity and grace. Here, it’s woven in gold zari against the deep red, wide and unmistakable, running along one side of the saree. The other side carries a smaller, more understated geometric diamond border, giving the saree a lovely asymmetry between its two edges.

The body itself is done in the classic velthari style — fine gold checked lines running across the red cotton, adding just enough shimmer without competing with the border work. The blouse comes attached in the same red body colour, so the saree is ready to wear as soon as it arrives.

The pallu carries the same wide annapakshi border, finished with fine gold zari lines running across it — making the pallu just as striking as the rest of the saree, the way a proper Madurai sungudi pallu should be.
