Turquoise meets deep maroon — a bright, lively colour paired with a rich, festive edge. Fine maroon mukkati dots scatter across the body, giving the fabric a soft, tonal shimmer, while the maroon border brings warmth and depth. Versatile enough for daily wear, dressy enough for festive days.

Technique

This is an Achu Kattu Sungudi — one of the most authentic sungudi sarees from Madurai, made using traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing. Artisans hand-stamp hot wax in precise mukkati dot patterns onto the cotton fabric using carved wooden blocks. Every single dot is placed individually by hand. The fabric is then dyed, the wax removed, and what’s left is that characteristic mukkati grouping — slightly irregular, completely unique, entirely handmade.

Body, border, pallu

The turquoise body is scattered edge to edge with fine maroon mukkati dots, giving the fabric a soft, tonal depth across its length. That gives way to a deep maroon border, carrying the Rettapet Rudraksha motif — a row of gold medallions set between slim striped dividers, glowing warmly against the dark ground. The pallu stays plain maroon, letting the woven border and dotted body do the talking.

A note about colour — please read before ordering

Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Actual colour may also appear slightly different from photos due to lighting and screen settings. 🌸 You may also notice slight sand smudges; sungudi sarees are dyed and dried in sand under sunlight as part of the traditional process.

Care instructions

First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach
Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
