Turquoise spreads across the body like a clear afternoon sky, scattered with tiny navy mukkati dots catching the light. Paired with a bold Rettapet Rudraksha border, this sungudi saree carries the easy, everyday elegance sungudi is loved for — perfect for both temple visits and casual wear.

Technique

This is an Achu Kattu Sungudi — one of the most authentic sungudi sarees from Madurai, made using traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing. Artisans hand-stamp hot wax in precise mukkati dot patterns onto the cotton fabric using carved wooden blocks. Every single dot is placed individually by hand. The fabric is then dyed, the wax removed, and what’s left is that characteristic mukkati grouping — slightly irregular, completely unique, entirely handmade.

Body, border, pallu

The turquoise body is scattered edge to edge with fine navy mukkati dots, giving the fabric a soft, textured shimmer even before the border comes in. That border arrives in deep navy, carrying the Rettapet Rudraksha motif — a row of gold medallions bordered by slim striped dividers, each one catching light against the dark ground. The pallu stays plain navy, a quiet contrast that lets the woven border and the dotted body do the talking.

Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Care instructions

First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach
Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
