Description
Brown Premium Spray Dot Sungudi Saree — Straight from Madurai’s Looms
Brown and turmeric yellow — warm, earthy, and completely rooted in Tamil tradition. This premium sungudi saree takes that deeply South Indian colour combination and makes it extraordinary through the அள்ளி தெளிச்ச (Alli Thelicha) technique. “Alli thelicha” in Tamil means splashed or sprayed, and that’s exactly how this saree is made. Wax is freely sprayed across the fabric before dyeing, creating an organic scatter of turmeric yellow dots against the rich brown body — glowing like embers on dark earth, like marigold petals scattered across a temple courtyard, like turmeric powder dusted across a festival floor. No template, no block, no repeating pattern. Every single premium saree that comes out of this process looks different from the last.
The technique — what makes this premium saree truly one of a kind
Unlike the Achu Kattu method where wax is hand-stamped using carved wooden blocks in precise patterns, the அள்ளி தெளிச்ச (Alli Thelicha) technique involves freely spraying or flicking wax across the cotton fabric before dyeing. The wax resists the dye wherever it lands, and when removed, leaves behind that characteristic organic scatter — dense in some places, sparse in others, completely unpredictable, completely beautiful. What makes this piece even more special is the warm turmeric yellow spray against the rich brown base — a combination that feels like it was made for festivals, temple visits, and every occasion that calls for something genuinely traditional.
The rich brown body is woven from premium 120 count Madurai cotton — finer, softer, and more refined than our standard sungudi sarees. The single side border features a double mango motif in gold zari with a traditional temple edge line running above it — the mango, one of Tamil Nadu’s most beloved traditional motifs, appearing twice across the border for a fuller, more ornate finish. The pallu carries fine gold zari lines running across its length, adding a warm shimmer that ties the whole look together beautifully.
No two pieces are identical. That’s not just a disclaimer — with அள்ளி தெளிச்ச (Alli Thelicha), it’s the entire point.

A note about colour — please read before ordering
Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Actual colour may also appear slightly different from photos due to lighting and screen settings. You may also notice slight sand smudges; sungudi sarees are dyed and dried in sand under sunlight as part of the traditional process.
Care instructions:
- First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
- Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach
- Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
- Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
A word on handcrafted pieces
Every அள்ளி தெளிச்ச (Alli Thelicha) premium sungudi saree is handmade and unique — slight variations in the spray pattern, colour tone, or weave are not just expected, they are the very nature of this technique. The actual colour may also vary slightly from photos due to lighting and screen settings.
