Leaf green runs the length of the body in fine Neli Velthari lines, delicate zari stripes tracing across the fabric like ripples on water. Paired with a striking black Rettapet Rudraksha border, this sungudi saree brings a fresh, vibrant colour together with a bold contrast edge — striking for festive days, easy enough for regular wear.

Technique

This is an Achu Kattu Sungudi — one of the most authentic sungudi sarees from Madurai, made using traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing. Artisans hand-stamp hot wax in precise Neli Velthari line patterns onto the cotton fabric using carved wooden blocks. Every line is placed individually by hand. The fabric is then dyed, the wax removed, and what’s left is that characteristic Neli Velthari striping — slightly irregular, completely unique, entirely handmade.

Body, border, pallu

The leaf green body carries fine Neli Velthari zari lines running across its length, giving the fabric a delicate rhythm from end to end. That gives way to a bold black border, carrying the Rettapet Rudraksha motif — a row of gold medallions set between slim striped dividers, glowing sharply against the dark ground. The pallu departs from the plain style seen in other sungudis, carrying the same Neli Velthari zari lines across a black ground, keeping the detailing consistent through to the very end of the saree.

A note about colour — please read before ordering

Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Care instructions

First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach
Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
