Description
Maroon Velthari Sungudi Saree
There’s something timeless about a velthari sungudi saree. The clean zari lines running across the body give it a quiet elegance that works just as well for a temple visit as it does for a family function. This one pairs a deep, wine-tinged maroon with a soft contrast pink, a combination that feels traditional and fresh at the same time.
How it’s made
This sungudi saree carries fine zari line stripes woven across the cotton, known as velthari. The saree is then dyed in the traditional Madurai way, with the border and pallu kept in a contrast pink while the body takes the deep maroon. Where the two colours meet, you’ll see a soft, slightly irregular edge rather than a sharp machine line. That’s the mark of hand-dyeing, and no two pieces turn out exactly alike.
Body, border and pallu
The body is a rich maroon with gold zari lines spaced evenly from end to end, each carrying a delicate woven pattern. Both edges are finished with a contrast pink border featuring a row of zari peacock motifs between slim zari bands. The pallu switches fully to pink and continues the same zari lines, so the drape flows from deep maroon into soft pink with the gold tying it all together.

A note about colour, please read before ordering
Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected, especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. Actual colour may also appear slightly different from photos due to lighting and screen settings. You may also notice slight sand smudges; sungudi sarees are dyed and dried in sand under sunlight as part of the traditional process.
Care instructions
First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent, no washing machine, no harsh bleach
Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade, not direct sunlight
Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
A word on handcrafted pieces
Every velthari sungudi saree from Madurai is hand-dyed, and slight variations in colour tone, where the maroon meets the pink, or in zari line placement are natural and expected. That’s part of what makes a handcrafted piece genuinely handcrafted.
