Description
Parrot Green Achu Kattu Single Dot Sungudi Cotton Saree — Straight from Madurai’s Looms
There’s something about parrot green that just feels alive. Pair it with a deep maroon border and gold zari, and you have a combination that’s been turning heads at Tamil weddings, temple visits, and family gatherings for generations. This is one of those sarees that doesn’t try too hard — it just is.
The Kattu Saayam process — what makes this saree special
This is an Achu Kattu Sungudi — made using traditional clamp and wax-resist dyeing, a labour-intensive method that no machine can replicate. Artisans hand-stamp hot wax in precise dot patterns onto the cotton fabric using carved wooden blocks. Every single dot is placed individually by hand. The fabric is then dyed, the wax removed, and what’s left is that characteristic single dot pattern scattered evenly across the body — slightly irregular, completely unique, entirely handmade.
The bright parrot green body is woven from pure Madurai cotton — fine, breathable, and naturally comfortable even through a long day. The deep maroon Rudraksh Rettapet border with gold zari gives it that grounded, traditional finish that Madurai sungudi sarees are known for.
No two pieces are identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

A note about colour — please read before ordering
Because these sarees are traditionally hand-dyed using natural processes, colour bleeding is expected — especially in the first few washes. This is completely normal and a sign of authentic dyeing. You may also notice slight sand smudges; sungudi sarees are dyed and dried in sand under sunlight as part of the traditional process.
Care instructions:
- First wash: Soak in cold water with a handful of rock salt for 15–20 minutes to help lock colour
- Wash separately: Hand wash alone with mild shampoo or liquid detergent — no washing machine, no harsh bleach
- Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), dry in shade — not direct sunlight
- Avoid long soaking; these are made from fine threads
A word on handcrafted pieces
Every Achu Kattu saree is handmade, and slight variations in weave, pattern placement, or colour tone are natural and expected. A few thread pulls here and there are part of what makes a handcrafted piece genuinely handcrafted. The actual colour may also vary slightly from photos due to lighting and screen settings
